Signs and Symptoms
Most people with gross hematuria see that their urine has a pinkish, reddish color or resemble the color of cola. When pain is felt, this is most probably be caused by another condition rather than hematuria itself. In some cases, bloody urine can only be observed under a microscope (microscopic hematuria).
Causes of Hematuria
Many people have hematuria without any other related problems. As mentioned earlier, hematuria may be caused by performing strenuous exercises and usually goes away within 24 hours. Some foods, such as beets, may also cause a discoloration of the urine that mimics bloody urine. This is not considered as a serious problem.
When other signs and symptoms accompany bleeding, it may indicate a problem in the urinary tract.
Conditions that may cause blood to leak into the urine include:
Urinary tract infections
A kidney or bladder stone
Benign prostatic hypertrophy (enlarged prostate)
Kidney disease such as glomerulonephritis
Cancer in the urinary tract (kidney, bladder or prostate cancer)
Direct injury or trauma to the kidneys
