Introduction: Kidney Infection
Kidney infection, known clinically as pyelonephritis, is a type of urinary tract infection (UTI) that occurs in one or both kidneys. Bacteria usually cause infection of the kidney that enters the urethra and travel to the bladder and kidneys. It can cause infection to any part of the urinary tract.
Normally, urine washes away the bacteria that cause infection. However, sometimes the bacteria do not get washed away, begin to multiply, and can cause an infection.
If a kidney infection is not treated promptly, it can cause permanent damage to the kidneys and may lead to chronic kidney disease. In rare cases, the bacteria causing the infection may spread into the bloodstream. This can lead to a life-threatening condition called sepsis.
